The charming little town of 80 people, Wasta, South Dakota, is an ideal location for the creation of an artist-in-residency program. With its proximity to extraordinary natural beauty such as the Black Hills and the Badlands National Park, the area is steeped in inspiring landscapes and historic treasures.

Residency Programs Models

The Vermont Studio Center provides a model for The Thunderheart Center for the Arts and Conference Center. The total cost per month to attend the Vermont Studio Center is $4,950.00, $4,250.00 if the monthly fee has been subsidized.

Many other residency programs are now completely funded with artists and writers being 100% supported financially during their stay. Those include: www.skowheganarts.org, www.macdowellcolony.org, www.yaddo.org

YEAR ONE of The Thunderheart Center for the Arts and Conference Center will launch its program providing an affordable monthly fee of $2,500.00 per artist/writer which includes food, lodging, and studio space. With a goal of 120 to 150 artists attending the program.

ABOUT

Three motel buildings owned by Larry and Adelaide Fuss and Fuss Properties will provide housing for the visiting artists and writers. The main motel building was used extensively in the filming of the 1992 Michael Apted film, Thunderheart, hence the name for this residency program. Screenwriter John Fusco was given this name by Grandpa Frank Fools Crow, an Oglala Lakota religious and community leader.
